According to police, the 84-year-old woman had arrived at her home in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal, when she was arrested by an unknown person.
As he stepped out of his car, the suspect grabbed him by the throat with a scuffle, police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said.
One of her relatives, who came home to visit her, intervened in an attempt to get the suspect out of the elderly woman.
The suspect then grabbed the skull from the car and shot the 67-year-old man in the mouth.
"The suspect fled the scene with cargo legs. While the suspect was fleeing from the scene, he stole a bicycle from another house and used it to flee." Zwane said.
However, the suspect did not arrive far when the neighborhood clock was alerted and a search was conducted.
"The suspect was arrested while riding a stolen bike on Stockville Road. Stolen garden traps that belonged to him were also handed over," Zwane said.
The suspect was handed over to the police and charged with house robbery, attempted murder and robbery.
The 67-year-old's condition was not immediately clear.
The man is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Monday.
